Vanished Villages

In Madison County, several villages have ceased to exist to the present.  There are remains and reminders of their presence such as old and vacant buildings, remnants of foundations, and beaten paths.  All too often, the reminder is only a wide space in the road.

These once thriving communities have left behind an even greater gift and that is their cemeteries and sometimes their churches.  Those thriving shops, taverns, and mercantiles have all vanished.  The buildings disintegrated leaving nothing but ruble.  The early settlers who populated these villages either moved on or now rest in the earth as a group nearby.

These ghosts of the past remind us of the imperfect world around us and that dreams can flourish quickly and die just as quickly.
